pitite interview sympa de Carte Holland pour ceux que ca interesse :

"Mommy's Little Monster"
THE CARTER HOLLAND INTERVIEW

I met Carter this summer at Jeff Lenosky's jump jam. I've run into him quite a bit since then and it seems like everytime I talk to him, I learn something new about him. We had a lengthy drive from Barcelona to Montpellier, so what better time to learn more about Carter and his style then on a lengthy drive through Europe!

Carter Holland was born in Richmond, Virginia and from age 1 until 11. He lived in a volkswagen van (gypsy-style) with his dad and then moved to Brooklyn, NYC in 1981 to live with his mom. When he was 20, he joined the Marine Corps for 5 years out in California. Carter served our country in Desert Storm in Iraq and Operation Restore Hope in Somalia and was a crew chief on a marine helicopter. When he got out of the military he became a cop in the city of Chino, CA for two years. In 1998 he bought a concrete pump and started a business pouring concrete. Carter started Black Market Bikes in 2004...

When did you start riding?
In 1981 (Brooklyn, NY) I got into bmx and rode mostly street and ramps and raced a little bit...just your typical bmx kid. My first bike was a San Tropez (Mongoose copy).

How did you make the switch to mountain bikes?
I broke my collarbone riding bmx at Encinitas. Tara Llanes had an extra mountain bike and because of the suspension, I was able to ride a month sooner. I started riding that and fell in love with mountain bikes.

What does your resume look like?
Cop, Marine, Lobster farm, fishing boat, Selling chinese yo-yos on Venice Beach, concrete pumper.

How did the idea for Black Market come around?
I started riding mountain bikes and didn't like the geometry of anything I was riding, and I wanted Chris Moeller to make me a bike. He didn't want to make just one and he didn't want to make his own mountain bikes, so I asked him if I could start a company and have him make the bikes. Chris opened the door for Black Market Bikes. You can't have a better company than S&M building your bikes..

What is your plan for Black Market Bikes? What do you want it to be?
I don't really have a plan, I just basically want to be able to ride and support the sport. I want to have fun with my friends and pee on them too.**(see story below)

What is one of your most important character building stories:
Marine Corps boot camp was probably one of the most important things I've ever done. It taught me a lot about myself...what kinds of things I can withstand and gave me pride in my country and how lucky we are to be where we are. You don't realize that until you go to a place like Somalia and see how some people are forced to live. It taught me how to be self-sufficient and to endure hardships. The police academy boot camp was nothing compared to the marine corps with regards to the stress.

Ian Hylands: What's it like being a mountain biker after being a good 20" rider?
It gets annoying pulling into a park and having everyone look at you like "what's this guy doing here" and bmxers face it too when they show up at a park full of skaters. If they prove themselves then everything chills because you're all there for the same reason, whether it's to express yourself/release aggression/search for the high that you get when you do something for the first time. At the end of the day, everything (stress, etc) just melts away because you had such a good time on your bike.

Jim Dechamp: Between running two companies, how do you find time to ride and how much more do you appreciate it as a result?
My hours with concrete pumping are real mellow. I work from 7am until 2pm because nobody wants to try to pour concrete after 2pm (they need time to finish it) so my workday is pretty short....then at night I return e-mails and work on Black Market. I ride pretty much every day. I live in Southern California so I can do that (ride everyday).

Cam McCaul: Were all of your life experiences topped by meeting William Hung at JFK Airport in NYC on your way to Barcelona? Yeah,... sure.

Dave Smutok: What's you best cop story:
Pursuit is the wildest thing you can get in and I was in a 100mph pursuit in a really tight two-lane road after a stolen vehicle...I was the second vehicle in a five car pursuit. They requested assitance when the vehicle blew through my town. I was following the highway patrol car and the road doglegged to the right and the suspect vehicle collided into a car head-on coming the other direction. The guy they hit was an off-duty highway patrol officer going to work. The officer's wife and kids were walking to get ice cream and they saw his car and flipped out. The guy in the backseat of the suspect vehicle was pinned underneath the back seat. The guy sitting shotgun put his arms out and they were broken cartoon-style like an accordian and the driver got his knee amputated by the dashboard. The off-duty officer made a full recovery.

How does the european trip compare to your other world travels?
This is my first time traveling outside of the country outside of the military and I'm having a great time. The riding has been good and everyone is having a great time. It's different with the military for culture shock because you go from civilization to third-world countries--you're forced to live completely different. Other than the food, Europe is pretty much the same on most other levels.

TURNDOWNS:
Turndowns have been my favorite trick since I was 13. The first time I saw it was on the cover of BMX Plus (Mike Miranda) and I had to learn it. The only reason I thought about going back to bmx was that I couldn't figure out how to do them on a mountain bike, but I heard Kirt Voreis was doing them, so I started working on them. Turndowns are just naaasty. I learned them on dirt...I've been doing them for so long on a bmx bike and once I found out that I had the leg room, it was the same trick. It's not as easy as a bmx bike, but the motion to do a turndown was natural.

What was it like to be on the cover of the 50th issue of DIRT?
I don't know yet, I haven't seen it in person yet! I'm so stoked on the whole idea of it...it's f---ing awesome. I have to thank Justin Kozman for the article and Mike Rose for the cover.

If you could be doing something else with you life with similar success, what would you be doing?
Driving racecars, I think that would be the ultimate, being a rally driver (Editors Note: At the moment, we are driving from Barcelona to Montpelier in a 6spd Mercedes 9-passenger van at 85mph and it feels like Carter is trying to live out his dream).

What percentage of your riding buddies are bmxers and what effect/influence does that have on you?
I grew up on a bmx bike, so I'm still kind of a bmxer and 98% of the people I ride with are bmxers. I just ride like a bmxer and I probably always will.

Ian Hylands: How do you feel about 24" wheels and the growing prevalence of Sledgehammers in mtb?
Personally I don't think 24s are mountain bikes, I like John Cowan's idea that a mtb has to have some combination of 26" wheels, front brakes, gears and a shock. Besides looking goofy, it's not a mountain bike. Guys are just riding 24s to make things easier.

Has anything in the mtb world influenced you in a new direction with regard to your riding or Black Market?
Just the opportunities to ride Whistler and the slopestyle contest opened my eyes...but I just like to ride bikes, bmx or mtb...I'm just a bike rider. But what I like about mountain bikes is that you can ride one bike pretty much anywhere (with the only exception maybe being changing tires).

What's your take on the other bmx riders entering the mountain bike side of things?
I'm all for it as long as they are in it to better the sport, not just to make money and get out. Some guys, it seems like they are coming over to take advantage of the fact that there are bigger paychecks in mtb, although some of those guys are finding out that it's not as easy as it looks. But it's only going to push our sport to get better and create more opportunities for everyone.

Do you have any goals to accomplish in the next few years?
My only goal right now is to try to make Blk Mrkt successful and just to enjoy life.

THANKS:
I have to thank Chris Moeller, Mike Flahrety, Justin Kozman, Ian Hylands, Aaron Lutze....everyone who is trying to promote the scene...my mom for all of her help and ideas, and all of my sponsors (Fox Shox, Shimano, Atomlab, Deity, E-13, IDUN).

**The Carter Pee Story**:
The second night out in Barcelona, everyone went out and we got pretty loaded at a club in Las Ramblas. We got back to the hotel and in the middle of the night, Cam woke up to the sight of Carter standing over the telephone dropping his drawers and preparing to relieve himself. He starting peeing on the telephone in the hotel room (which was right next to Cam's pillow) and when Cam asked him what he was doing, Carter's response was "Don't worry about it, just get me a spoon."
